ABOUT THE ARTIST

Artist Statement:
I create instinctively, driven by an essential need for my own sanity and well-being. Art serves as my means of processing the world around me and within me. It is less a choice than a compulsion, a way of breathing through color, form, and expression.
The work I share is deeply personal, yet I believe art transcends the artist's original intent. I create with the understanding that each observer will bring their own experiences, emotions, and interpretations to what they encounter. This subjectivity is not a limitation but a gift—it allows my work to live beyond my own understanding of it, to become something new and meaningful in ways I may never have imagined.
When I share my art, I am reaching toward connection, seeking to feel part of the larger tapestry of humanity. My work becomes a bridge between my inner world and the observer's, creating space for multiple truths to coexist. What the piece means to you is as valid and important as what it means to me.
In this exchange—between creator and observer, between intention and interpretation—art fulfills its highest purpose: to remind us of our shared humanity while honoring the uniqueness of our individual experiences.
Bio:
Theresa Makani is a South New Jersey-based fine artist and graphic designer whose meticulous realist paintings and unique fusion of abstract realism mix-media art, emerge from a deeply personal creative process that mirrors life itself. Drawing inspiration from intricate patterns, the play of light on glass, textures, and everyday objects, Theresa approaches her subjects with curiosity, seeking to capture familiar things from unexpected perspectives.
Working with multiple media including oils, acrylics, pastels, watercolors, and mixed media, Theresa deliberately seeks out difficult compositions that challenge her technique and push her artistic boundaries. Her realistic style, influenced by the works of Janet Fish, transforms ordinary subjects into compelling visual experiences that draw viewers in revealing layers of intricate details. Theresa visually shares her fascination with how colors change and light bends creating hidden worlds of textures we ordinarily miss in passing.
From a young age, creativity was woven into the fabric of Theresa’s life. Crayons, pencils and watercolors were what she used instinctively for her visual expression. Art was her solace and a passion she shared with Haydee Hernandez, her mother. Theresa’s artistic instincts have always been and remain the driver of her creativity. Outgoing and quirky around those she connects with, she is happiest when spending her time in her studio. Her process requires her complete attention—nothing else exists during these intensive creative sessions. She has fully committed herself to her craft, spending countless late nights in her studio, chasing artistic fulfillment.
While continuing to operate Theresa Makani Designs LLC, her graphic design business of over twenty years, Theresa recently reignited her lifelong passion for painting, dedicating herself to honing her skills and developing her distinctive expression as a fine artist. Her dual background in commercial design and fine art forms her keen eye for composition and technical precision.
Theresa views creativity as an integral part of her identity and believes that the happiness derived from artistic expression is inherently infectious. She continues her creative journey with enthusiasm, looking forward to sharing ideas, growing alongside fellow artists, contributing meaningfully to her local art community, and continuing to share her art.
